]]>
Bass Canyon is one of my favorite festivals because it brings those classic Pacific Northwest festival vibes and has some of my favorite music. The festival kicks off this weekend, and here is what you need to know if this is your first trip to Bass Canyon:

What is Bass Canyon?

Bass Canyon is one of Excision’s curated festivals and is home to some of the biggest bass names in the industry. This is Bass Canyon’s 3rd year at the gorge and is back and bigger than ever. With over 25,000 attendees, this festival is famous for bone-rattling bass with an incredible view.

Where is Bass Canyon?

Bass Canyon takes place at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State between August 18-20th. The Gorge Amphitheatre is rated the #1 most beautiful outdoor venue in the country, and you’ll see why as soon as you walk over that hill.

Who is playing at Bass Canyon?

The lineup is packed with world renowned DJs and Producers. There will be a total of 3 stages! They will be called the Main Stage, Hilltop Stage and the Locals Stage. The Main Stage will feature Excision, Dion Timmer, Ganja White Knight + many more! Check out the lineup below.

The local lineup is INSANE! It is home to many PNW locals and will definitely be worth checking out.

What should I wear to Bass Canyon?

Feel free to check out our guide on what to wear to raves that has links to all of the latest style secrets! Keep in mind, the venue does get cold at night, so make sure to pack a warm change of clothes for when the sun goes down. There will be lockers available to stash your clothes inside the venue.

Most importantly, you will be doing a LOT of walking—so make sure to wear sensible walking shoes. The “Bag Policy” at the Gorge changed for this event so make sure your bag is smaller than 12’’ x 12’’ x 6” and it has to be clear! (Hydration packs are okay but they must have a clear bladder). Fanny packs will not be allowed if they are not clear.

What should I bring to Bass Canyon?

Bass Canyon is a camping festival, so come prepared. There are hotels about 45 minutes away but the majority of attendees will be camping. If you are camping, check out our guide to preparing for camping festivals here. There are food vendors inside the festival as well as in the campground so snacks are fine until you get inside.

Deep in the hills of Washington, on the edge of a cliff overlooking a beautiful, vast canyon is one of the most captivating events ever created—Bass Canyon Music Festival at The Gorge Amphitheater. It’s a music festival, an expedition, a community, a camping trip and the party of a lifetime. It's a bass music festival that is not for the weak. It’s a place where you can get in touch with your most intimate self and in the same moment remember why skulls and fire are so cool. It’s three days, three nights and a pre-party of neck-breaking, booty shaking, tear-jerking bass music.

Bass Canyon really feels complete. You can visit to the Pivot for things like food trucks, clothing vendors, LED accessories, lingerie and festival merch or you can drop by the activity tent for scheduled yoga classes, sound baths and guided meditations to help you meet and align with your highest self.

Then, when the gates open, you can head down to the amphitheater and rage to some of the biggest and best DJs in the world. Bass Canyon was created by Excision in 2018 and the dubstep legend has done it again. This year’s vibes were unmatched. Excision used all of his industry experience to curate this festival and it unfolded perfectly. Here’s how it went at Bass Canyon 2021:

The festival is technically three days long—Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. But in order to really get the best experience you need to get there on Thursday to set up camp and go to the pre-party.

The first thing you need to know about camping is you have to get there early because there will be people lined up all throughout the night to get their camping spot. The first thing you need to know about the pre-party is you absolutely must go. If your group is still undecided when the time comes I strongly recommend urging them to make it because it is worth it. There’s nothing quite like the Bass Canyon pre-party probably in the world. It's six-hour b2b2b2b2b with some of the biggest names in the game right now.

This year’s pre-party included Yookie, Svdden Death, Champagne Drip, Kompany, Eptic, Sullivan King and more. The thing that makes the Bass Canyon pre-party so special is it doesn’t just feel like all those guys are just taking turns playing songs. The pre-party set was an incredibly exciting, cohesive mix of all types of sounds, personalities and genres. It has to be called a party because there’s no actual lineup.

From brutal, headbanging dubstep, to sad, emotional cry songs, to fun, bouncy deep-house, to some freaky minimal-trap, no matter where you are on the basshead spectrum you’re moving the entire time. All on the highest quality visuals and sound systems available. It’s just a big conglomerate of everything bass, performed by some of the most talented bass music artists out there. I walked back to camp that night asking myself “that was just the pre-party?” I was fired up and ready for whatever the festival had waiting for us on the first day.

Day one was no mercy. Not only did it have the heaviest sets of the whole festival, it was also the day you found out just how much hiking/walking would be involved over the weekend. Unlike other large-scale venues, The Gorge is not on flat land. There are hills everywhere—which means if you like hiking and being outside it's great. This is also the first year they decided to add an extra stage. Originally it was just the main stage overlooking the canyon and a local’s stage on the side.

This year they added another slightly smaller main stage called the “hilltop stage.” Which, you guessed it, is at the top of a hill. Made for artists that aren’t quite superstars yet and might still be too underground for the big stage. Here we saw names like Luzcid, Bawldy, DMVU, Au5 and Inzo. The added dance floor is a great addition because Excision gets to invite many more DJs, but it also means because of set times and the commute between stages you may have to miss one of your favorite artists to catch another one.

Day one holds a lot of chaos as rave-crews are still learning the layout of the festival and how they want to carry out their plans for the rest of the festival. I recommend trying the yoga on the first day to get you nice and loose for the weekend. I tried it, it was my first time ever and it was amazing. Getting rid of all that stiffness and tension from work and our daily lives before going out and raging all night really made it easier for the rest of the weekend. Even only doing it for one day really made a difference.

The food is delicious, my favorite is the pulled pork mac and cheese with a barbecue sauce that's just heavenly. The musical highlights of the day included sets from Yookie to start things off, Champagne Drip next, Calcium b2b Kompany, and a bone-snapping set from Phaseone during the day. Then, when the sun went down we got into a b2b with Sullivan King and Kai Wachi, Svdden Death after that, Liquid Stranger and finally Excision followed up last for probably one of the best order of set slots I could’ve asked for. Each one brought more energy than the last, and each one was better than the last time I saw them. It was amazing. I knew as soon as Excision’s set ended that I would be sore for day two.

The second day was vibe city. Everyone now knew what to expect. Everyone had their gameplans and meet-spots. It was time to party. It rained for about an hour that day and no one missed a beat. Day raving started with Eliminate, then Dirt Monkey, ATLiens and Space Laces. The vibes were high. Love was abundant. The booties were shaking. The sun came back out. It was Phenomenal. Everyone was smiling, laughing, dancing, hootin’, hollering and just letting their joy fill the entire Gorge. Take me back.

When nightfall arrived it got even better. First, the vibes stayed high for an amazing Dion Timmer b2b Wooli set. Then they went crazy for Twelfth Planet b2b Riot Ten. My group and I then caught Bawldy at the hilltop stage and were not disappointed. BTSM got us all the way down with our bad selves, and to finish off the night there was a blistering hot set laid down by Ganja White Knight. It was my first time hearing them perform and I could not have asked for a better introduction. If you haven’t seen them live yet you’re sorely missing out. After the day ends, they kicked us out of the amphitheater and the party continues. A silent disco was going down at the activity tent, food trucks were still open, and camp-site renegades were everywhere. Day two really hit the spot.

Day three the party just kept going. Decadon, Level Up and Ray Volpe started things off to keep the energy high. The sun is beaming and the music is fire. It looked like it was shaping up to be another beautiful rave day, but half way through Boogie T’s set they shut everything down due to high winds. First they just shut down the main stage but eventually stopped the music altogether. The festival organizers finally announced they would allow re-entry if they wanted to wait at their camp and all was calm while we waited to rage again. This lasted for about two and a half hours. Then, as soon as Boogie T came back on it was like nothing ever happened. The last night went on and the DJs crushed it again. This time we had LSDream, Subtronics, Slander and a gorgeous Excision b2b Illenium set to finish it all up.

It was the perfect finish to the festival—a night full of fast-paced excitement and slow moments of tender intimacy. They hit every note and it was a bitter-sweet ending to an unforgettable experience.

And then came Monday and it was time to pack it up and go home. I was left with a feeling like I never wanted it to end but also couldn't think of what else to add. It’s finished, it’s over, it’s done, but it feels complete. The good vibes never left. Some people left early in the morning, some people stayed into the afternoon. It’s a time for reflection. The air was filled with gratitude and residual excitement lingered in the campground. Memories are still fresh and muscles are still sore. I departed from The Gorge feeling fulfilled, happy and feeling like you’re finally able to fully breathe again. Bass Canyon Music Festival is a place made for spiritual growth—a festival for down-to-earth people that focuses on health, balance, fun and acceptance. I hope you’ll be there when the time comes again. I know I will.

Lineup

Excision made a post a couple of weeks before the lineup drop announcing that there was an Excision b2b Illenium set in the works, raising excitement and anticipation for bassheads waiting for the lineup drop. The lineup has many heavy hitters such as BTSM, Champagne Drip, Ganja White Night (rumor has it that he will be closing out the second day!), Liquid Stranger, and many more! Excision also made a post on Facebook hinting at a possibility for a second stage with up and coming artists, Drum N Bass, and Melodic and Future Bass artists. The Gorge Amphitheater is one of the most stunning music venues in the US. There’s a gigantic hill overlooking the stage with the canyons and lakes spreading behind it. My favorite set from Bass Canyon was the Liquid Stranger: Wakkan Takeover. LSDream and Lucii were my favorite additions. This set was as magical as it was trippy. Liquid Stranger did not mess around when it came to this set. By far the best Liquid Stranger set I’ve ever seen.

Also, Dion Timmer got to play the sunset slot, and it was nothing short of incredible.

There was such incredible art this year at Bass Canyon. Here are some shots from some local ravers:

We had a very special surprise this year at Bass Canyon, we got Android Jones’, 360-degree, Samskara dome. This immersive art/audio exhibit was EXTRAORDINARY. It’s been all over the world & we were blessed to have this in our presence. If you had time to stop by, consider yourself lucky.

WAVES was also back at it again with their super impressive Space Dome. The Space Dome, hosted by Bass Therapy, was stacked with the best local bass DJ’s the Pacific Northwest has to offer. This immersive art experience paired with amazing talent was definitely one of the highlights at Bass Canyon this year. With image projection and incredible installations, this dome was out of this world.

I’m definitely not alone when I say this festival was incredible. Read what some other headbangers have to say about Bass Canyon 2019:

“Everything about Bass Canyon makes it my favorite festival. Having only one stage so we never miss a set together is perfect! My camping squad made a village amongst 4 passes so we had a blast both and outside of the venue! This year was definitely my favorite so far!” - @kristin_sonnier

“Bass Canyon was new and different this year than last from the way I got to see the festival. I worked hospitality--which is helping prepare for the artists' arrival and checking on them to make sure they are comfortable and happy--for the first two days. It helped me appreciate how much goes on behind the scenes that most people don't even realize is necessary, like keeping the light and visual guys hydrated so the show can go on! I also work with Bass Therapy who put on the Space Dome, and to see its transformation from the foam party stage from last year blew my mind. We've come so far as a company this year, and it's really exciting to see the same artists playing on the main stage at the Gorge playing our shows.”

We arrived at the pre-party almost an hour late and my boyfriend, Chase went to fill his water pack. While he was trying to hurry his way back to me, he fell in a hole, rolled out of it and continued to find me. When he got to me he was in complete agony. His right shoulder was protruding up about 2 inches. After a long night in the medic tent, we missed the pre-party and just went to bed. The next morning we got up and went to the local ER. He tore his AC ligament. I spent most the time in the car crying and wanting to go home. By the time we got out of the hospital and back to the campsite, I had 40 minutes to get ready. My best friend was there waiting for me with my outfit. She helped me “Cinderella that shit” and we were off to the ball. The Dr from the night before, offered us a ride in, bypassing the lines so Chase’s arm wouldn’t get hit and bumped standing in line. Once we were in we found a cozy spot and let our freak flags fly. During Sullivan King’s set, he dropped Linkin Parks song, "Bleed it out", Chase grabbed me when the song was over and did a kandi trade with me. He then got on his knee, my bestie handed him a ring and he asked me to be his wife. When I said yes the crowd went crazy. And talk about making the moment ten times more magical, there happened to be a photographer there by the name of Jess Bernstein who captured the most perfect picture. Last week, thousands of ravers rejoiced over the anticipated lineup announcement for Bass Canyon 2020! Get ready for three days of headbanging at one of the most beautiful venues in America from August 28 - 30th! I was lucky enough to attend the first year and it was one of the most amazing experiences that I have ever had. Based on my first Bass Canyon experience, I've compiled 5 tips that can help you prepare for Bass Canyon. This year is expected to be even better and bigger!

Based on my first Bass Canyon experience, I've compiled 5 tips that can help you prepare for Bass Canyon:

1. Buy Your Tickets Early

This festival is likely to sell out, so make sure you get your tickets ASAP. There are a lot of different packages for tickets, so read carefully before making a decision. Also, note that your ticket DOES NOT include camping, so you'll need to purchase a camping pass separately. There are also three options for layaway plans that are available until June 5th (provided the event doesn't sell out). I would also highly recommend purchasing a pre-party pass in addition to your ticket, which gets you access to a lit pre-game on Thursday (the night before the event officially starts). This year, the pre-party is scheduled to be inside the Gorge instead of in the campgrounds, which could be a really cool opportunity to have access into the Gorge before everybody else!

2. Buy Premier Camping

As I mentioned above, you'll need to coordinate with your squad to purchase a camping pass or package, in addition to your tickets. The Gorge Amphitheater offers five different options for camping, from Standard Camping to upgraded camping such as Terrace Camping and Easy Camping. The best option for the price is definitely Premier Camping; it’s closer to the venue, has bigger camping spots, has the best views of the Gorge on the campsite, and has private shuttles and free showers. I did Standard Camping last year and it was definitely fun- I had some really nice camping neighbors and it was a homey spot. However, the perks that Premier Camping offers is definitely worth the price. It’ll make your camping experience much better, especially when the Gorge is your home for the next three days! I’d definitely do Premier this year myself. This option sells out the fastest, so make sure you buy it ASAP! You can purchase camping passes and see what each one offers here.

3. Make a Packing List and Check it Twice!

Many people fly from all of the U.S. and world to go to the Gorge and I was one of those people too. It’s a trip worth taking, for both the amazing venue as well as the festival! If you’re flying in like I was, make a packing list of items you need for camping! My squad and I rented a car in Seattle and drove to a nearby store to buy everything that was on our list, rather than fly with the supplies. Here is the official list from Bass Canyon's website that include some essential and important items to bring!

Make sure to check the FAQs on Bass Canyon’s site to know what else is prohibited into the campsite and festival, as well as other common questions.

4. Bring Something to Share With Your Squad

Attending a camping festival with your squad is always a fun time! To make it much more fun for your whole group, I recommend making a totem or a festival flag for your group! Bass Canyon was the first festival that I made a totem for. I really enjoyed designing my totem and decking it out! It’s fun to show off your creativity to the whole crowd. Making a totem also helps your squad find you in a sea of ravers, so you’ll never lose your friends again. Some other fun items to share with your squad include those blow-up lounge chairs. They’re allowed into the venue and campsite and it's perfect for laying on at the Gorge since there’s so much room at this venue, you can lounge and still enjoy the show. You can check out my blog post for totem inspiration + a tutorial to build a light-up totem!

5. Deck Out Your Campsite and Squad Outfits!

With the campsite being your home for three days, you want to make it as homey as possible! And with so many tents everywhere, it can sometimes be hard to locate your exact spot. Decorate your campsite! Not only does it make it much more unique, but it can also help you find your tent. Many people use flags, totems, and even balloons to pinpoint their tent. When it gets dark, it can be even harder to find your tent. You can use battery-powered string lights and LED strips to help light up your tent as well as guide you back to your tent at night! It looks cool and is helpful too. Decorating your tent is also the chance to express what you love! I saw so many cool flags and tapestries at the campsite, and it was cool to talk to ravers about their decorations, especially if it’s something you like as well! Many people brought cool items to the campsite as well, such as speakers, corn hole boards, and games that make camping much more fun for everyone. Also, if you need Bass Canyon outfit inspiration for the campground or the festival itself, we've got you covered!

Bass Canyon was an unforgettable experience for me. The Gorge is one venue that all ravers NEED to go to at least once! The views you get while raving and camping are breathtaking and unreal. Also, three days of the heaviest and dirtiest drops- what could be better? Bass Canyon is a festival that you should not miss!

See you at the Gorge!

Seeing the photos of other events and festivals taking place at that gorge-ous venue and the amazing views of the Columbia River and mountains made me determined to visit this venue. Earlier this year, I saw that Bass Canyon, a new festival hosted by Excision, was taking place there. After seeing the lineup and location, I knew I had to go. Full on production, lasers, all things bass, The Paradox, scenic views- what more could I ask for? I took a flight to Seattle, rented a car with my best friend, and we took off for the Gorge Amphitheatre with our car full of camping gear.

We arrived that Thursday night before the weekend of Bass Canyon and got set up at our designated camping area. It was dark and windy and my friend and I struggled to set up our tent, but with the help of our friendly neighbors, we were finally able to get our tent standing and secure! Day one hadn’t even started yet and the music was already blasting on the campsite with a b2b pre-party hosted by Excision himself. I could tell everyone was just as excited as I was to be at the Gorge and Bass Canyon with everyone jamming at the pre-party and other activities like the silent disco held at the mecca of the campsite. One thing I love about camping festivals is the opportunity to participate in many different activities hosted by the campsite, as well as having the chance to chill and get to know your camping neighbors. There’s always something to do and ravers to meet! And of course, there were ravers who were already tucked into their tents, getting their beauty sleep before the weekend full of bass and headbanging.

Day one is always the craziest: everyone is well-rested and excited for the festival to begin. Slowly, flocks of ravers wearing sparkles and glitter, carrying pois and hoops were making their journey from the campsite to the Gorge Amphitheatre. The great thing about Bass Canyon was that there were no set time conflicts! All the acts played on the scenic mainstage, so everyone could see all the same sets. I made it inside the venue right as Al Ross b2b Dirt Monkey b2b Subtronics got on and I began watching my first set of the weekend. Seeing all of the energy expressed with the whole crowd headbanging from the floor to the hills of the venue, I knew that this was a festival was going to be unlike any other. I mostly camped out on the concrete during Day 1 with my friend as we stayed for Squnto, AFK b2b Svdden Death, Figure, Trampa, 12th Planet, Rusko, BTSM, and finally, Excision and his Paradox set. As each set progressed, I could tell that the crowd was only getting more excited and the production was getting wilder and wilder, with tons of Kvant lasers being shot out, the bass getting heavier, and the visuals getting more crazier. My favorite set that day had to be Excision’s, with BTSM in second place. I have always wanted to see the Paradox in person after hearing so many people’s experiences of it and getting to see it in action was beyond my expectations. The crowd was the craziest and most energetic I have ever seen with everyone headbanging from day till night. Even after day one was over, people were still so full of energy around the campsite. There were still two more days to go!

The second day we got in much sooner and explored the venue a little more. There were tons of booths and places to relax such as a whole tent full of hammocks, a meditating tent, and a stage that shot out tons of foam.

We then headed to the stage to catch Sullivan King. Despite Bass Canyon being a bass-heavy festival, there are still many different styles of dubstep, riddim and trap, which became prevalent after seeing Sullivan King. We stayed on the main floor of the Gorge from that set on until the end of that day. My favorite set of day two was Downlink b2b Space Laces; I’ve been a fan of Space Laces’ music and seeing that b2b with Downlink made that set 100 times better. It got a bit rainy during the second day but it obviously didn’t kill any of the ravers’ vibes! Everyone still went wild and headbang despite the occasional drizzle and wind. Another crazy day was over and sadly the final day was coming close.

Sunday morning was a little different: it was a bittersweet moment seeing all of our neighbors starting to pack up their gear for that night. Of course, it was only a reminder for all of us to go even harder on the final day. And I knew for sure I was, especially with the lineup that day. It was the most stacked in my opinion, featuring Excision’s Detox set, Barely Alive b2b Virtual Riot b2b PhaseOne, Slander and the final set of Excision b2b NGHTMRE. Most of these artists I had never seen live so I was looking forward to this day the most. My favorite set that day was by far the closing set with Excision and NGHTMRE. At that point, I had seen both their sets separately, but their b2b was on a completely different level: lasers were shooting everywhere, the combo of their visuals was so mesmerizing, and the crowd was exerting their excitement and energy. It was the perfect way to close of the weekend of all things bass.

Main Stage at the Gorge During Bass Canyon

All in all, I wouldn't have asked for anything different of that weekend; getting to camp and live at the Gorge for a whole weekend was an experience I had looked forward to for ages and it finally happened. Camping at a festival is a completely different experience than a regular festival. Although there were some struggles such as setting up the tent and the light drizzle, it didn’t ruin my experience at all. In fact, it made it so much more adventurous and provided me the opportunity to meet new people. I met so many amazing bassheads and camping neighbors- someone even made my weekend by gifting me a Bass Canyon umbrella! I never thought of myself as a basshead, but my weekend at the Gorge completely changed my perspective. I’d definitely recommend everyone to head to Bass Canyon next year! Lost Lands anyone?!

With so many festivals taking place in the summer, it can sometimes be difficult to decide which ones to attend. There are many different factors to consider when choosing what festivals to attend. Earlier this year, Excision announced the inaugural festival, Bass Canyon, that will take place at Washington State at the Gorge Amphitheater from August 24th - 26th. Excision’s first Lost Lands festivals held last year was such a success that there will be no doubt that Bass Canyon will be just as good! This festival has so all you would want at a festival. Here are five reasons that you should definitely attend:

1. The Gorge Amphitheater

If you haven’t been to The Gorge Amphitheater, then you are missing out for sure! This venue is set in a stunning location, sitting right above the Columbia River and right next to the Cascade Mountains. It is one of the scenic and best outdoor venues in the U.S. and is the perfect location for Bass Canyon! This 20,000+ capacity venue features lawn-terrace seating and the mainstage is set at the bottom of the hill, which provides everyone a perfect view of the beautiful natural backdrop, as well as the massive stage.

2. Bass Canyon Lineup

This lineup is calling all bassheads and all ravers who are looking for a headbangin’ time! Featured on this lineup is an Excision b2b NGHTMRE set on top of two solo sets from Excision - a Paradox and Detox set. Other headliners include Zomboy,12th Planet, Black Tiger Sex Machine, Bro Safari, Figure, Herobust, Slander, Virtual Riot, and many more! Excision always brings the best up-and-coming acts along with some of dubstep’s biggest names to his previous events. This lineup for Bass Canyon is stacked with some of the best bass and dubstep artist that you definitely can’t miss out on.

3. The Paradox

Excision is known for his mindblowing stage and sound production, especially the Paradox, which is known for having one of the most hypnotic stage experiences and insane visuals in the world. Excision utilizes special DJ equipment that is based on mp4 files versus audio files, which allows him to control both the visuals and music at the same time. The animations for the Paradox are all completely designed for every one of his songs and created just for the Paradox stage. That together in sync with his music makes you feel like you are part of his sets rather than just watching it.

4. Stage and Sound Production

Along with bringing the Paradox stage right to the Gorge, Bass Canyon will also feature 500k watts of PK bass, 20 top-of-the-line Kvant Lasers, hundreds of lights and strobes controlled by some of the best lighting designers and much more! All these together will create the most surreal audiovisual experience that is a must see.

5. Camping at The Gorge

I’ve had a few experiences myself camping at a music festival and I believe that it brings the festival experience to a whole different level; you’re surrounded by other ravers and right next to the venue. And nothing beats camping at The Gorge! The campgrounds offer four different types of camping packages- Standard, Terrace, Premier and Easy Camping. Also on the campgrounds is The Pivot, which is the central location where you can get whatever you might need and a perfect spot for meeting up with groups.
